What Causes Preterm Labor?

Preterm labor is a serious medical condition that can have a variety of causes. It is important for pregnant women to be aware of the potential triggers of preterm labor so they can take steps to reduce their risk. Common triggers of preterm labor include problems with the uterus or placenta, smoking cigarettes or using illicit drugs, certain infections, and chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, and depression. Spontaneous preterm birth after

preterm birth

(PTL) or premature premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) account for around half of all preterm births.

Contrary to popular belief, bed rest does not appear to help prevent

preterm birth

and can even have its own risks.Cerclage is a procedure that may be recommended for women who have a short cervix and have had a preterm birth before. This procedure involves stitching the cervix closed to help prevent preterm labor. It is important to note that we assume the subject-specific underlying probability of being exposed to each possible trigger was constant within the 72-hour interval between the control period and that of the case.Existing research suggests that sexual intercourse does not increase the risk of preterm birth in low-risk pregnancies; however, evidence on high-risk pregnancies is inconsistent. This finding, together with the associations found with not sleeping and not eating, suggests that alterations in circadian rhythms may be linked to premature birth.

Eating spicy foods, sleep interruptions, and skipping meals were all identified as factors associated with the onset of spontaneous preterm labor. In conclusion, it appears that sexual intercourse may cause premature birth in susceptible pregnancies; and that lack of appetite or sleep may predict the imminent onset of labor. Unfortunately, there is a lack of information on acute causes and modifiable risk factors which prevents doctors from adequately counseling women on behaviors that could be modified to reduce the risk of preterm birth. When a woman has a spontaneous preterm birth at a very early gestational age (between 20 and 32 weeks of gestation), infection or inflammation is usually the most common cause. Indicated preterm births (maternal or fetal conditions that cause an early planned delivery) were excluded.Well-defined indicators can be useful for obstetricians trying to treat a woman at risk of preterm delivery, especially when it comes to urgent treatments such as tocolytic therapy or the administration of steroids for pulmonary maturity of the fetus.

Medications such as corticosteroids, magnesium sulfate, and tocolytics can help prepare the fetus for preterm birth.
